Embrace the Mutation: Fiction Inspired by the Art of J. K. Potter
Published in Hardcover by Subterranean (July, 1902)
Authors: William Schafer and Bill Sheehan
Average review score:

Art scares
This is a beautiful book, the production value of the book alone is worth buying it. This is an unusal book due to the stories being based on art work by J.K.Potter. Potters art is for the most part disturbing mutations of the real and un-real to form a horror universe all of its own. The art is perfect as the base for the stories and the writers gathered for this book are some of the best in the feild. The writing is top notch and the authors presented here really seem to get into the project. Of the two versions of the book, the limited edition is really the one to buy if you can afford it ... it is singned by all the authors, editors, and J.K. Potter. The limited edition also has extra art work and a bonus chap book signed. The limited edition is limited to only 100 copies so get it if you can. The trade edition is signed by editors and J.K.Potter and is still a great looking and reading book ...

Enabling Communication in Children with Autism
Published in Paperback by Jessica Kingsley Pub (January, 2001)
Authors: Carol Potter and Chris Whittaker
Average review score:

Enabling Communication in Children with Autism
"Enabling Communication in Children with Autism" is a very practical book which helps teachers ,parents and others working with Autistic childen to provide an environment which will optimise the opportunities for communication to take place. I found the book easy to read in clear "bite sized" chapters with a good mix of case studies and practical examples. As a teacher I found I could apply it well to my own setting.

It does not require expensive resources, or staff to completely re-organise classroom settings. Rather, it emphasises how crucial it is for adults to examine their own communication strategies with childen, and how this can be vital in extending children's own communicative acts.

Two of the main stategies are the use of minimal speech and proximal communication. In applying these approaches described I felt very comfortable, and I have observed positve changes as a result over a period of a few weeks. These ,and other strategies are clearly and easily explained with practical examples. The approaches described fit well with other techniques for teaching children with Autism, eg PECs and TEACCH.

Encyclopaedia of Indian Philiosophies: Bibliography
Published in Hardcover by Motilal Banarsidass Pub (01 May, 1998)
Author: Karl H Potter
Average review score:

Fine scholarly historical account of Indian philosophy
These eight volumes on Indian philosophy provide a nice account for what can be found in scholarly publications. Do not expect a fine philosophical analysis from these volumes, the focus on historical representativeness does not leave enough time to discuss anything else than the main points. One cannot summarize the Indian philosophy over such a large period of time without leaving untouched some important aspects.

The contribution of these volumes however remains the focus on showing what are the holes in our knowledge of the Indian philosophy from a scientific viewpoint. This contribution is extremely valuable to counter-balance the many misbeliefs Western as well as Eastern scholars might have concerning this tremedous Indian "heritage" which largely remains to be discovered. A must-read for all scholars wishing to gain a more accurate picture of the development of Indian philosophy.

Encyclopaedia of Indian Philiosophies: Samkhya Philosophy
Published in Hardcover by Motilal Banarsidass Pub (01 January, 1987)
Author: Karl H Potter
Average review score:

Excellent account on Samkhya
Samkhya is one among the most thorough works treating ontology and epistemology. Samkhya can be seen as THE "philosophy" of India. Most modern philosophical works are just shallow compared to it. No philosopher can be considered as such without knowledge of Samkhya. Western philosophers are proud of their childish and superficial word jugglery. Philosophy is not about argument, it's about real understanding of ontology and epistemology. One is not a philosopher by great discourses, the way one lives shows one's understanding. Modern philosophers talk a lot but do not seem to be able to apply what they say on themselves. Such philosophers only appear to be philosophers, but they are not. Don't be mislead by scholarly accomplishments, these are worth nothing.

This volume goes very deep into Samkhya, a must-read. Excellent work Karl.

Encyclopaedia of Indian Philosophies: The Philosophy of the Gammarians
Published in Hardcover by Motilal Banarsidass Pub (01 May, 2001)
Author: Karl H Potter
Average review score:

Too often neglected
The tradition of the grammarians is often neglected in Indian philosophy. The grammarians show quite well how deeply linguistics and philosophy was tackled by Indian scholars centuries ago, illustrating the incredible advanced state of Indian philosophical and ontological knowledge compared to other parts of the world. The influence of the grammarians on the other branches of Indian philosophy cannot be over-emphasized. The name of "grammarian" is misleading because it goes farther than that, Indian linguists had an impressively good knowledge of language, both in syntax and semantics, maybe even better than linguists think to have nowadays.

A must-read !

Feminist Epistemologies (Thinking Gender)
Published in Paperback by Routledge (December, 1992)
Authors: Linda Alcoff and Elizabeth Potter
Average review score:

this is an excellent book, worthy of reading and re-reading.
Feminist Epistemologies is a collection of a number of essays, by different authors with varying backgrounds. Dealing with the braod subject of feminism, Feminist Epistemologies touches on the key concepts that constitute the area of study. Raising seemingly contraversial points, and asserting outrite what is dangerous to the marginalized groups of people, Feminist Epistemologies is a great introductory book to the arena of feminism.

The Fort That Became a City: An Illustrated Reconstruction of Fort Worth, Texas 1849-1853
Published in Paperback by Texas Christian Univ Pr (October, 1995)
Authors: Richard F. Selcer and William B. Potter
Average review score:

Excellent history on the 1849 founding of a great Texas city
This is an excellent history of Fort Worth, Texas. Founded in 1849 as an army outpost in what was then the western frontier of Texas. The soldiers were there to protect settlers. The book features original architectural drawings of what the original fort probably looked like. The illustrator researched the fort through the National Archives and other records and came up with artist's views of the frontier outpost. The accompanying text explains the history of the fort and how it grew into one of the country's great cities. This is a great "coffee table" book, and would appeal to anyone interested in the history of the old west.

Four Musical Minimalists : La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (June, 2000)
Author: Keith Potter
Average review score:

gnarly music theory exposition, and history too
Potter's book will be best appreciated by those with a much better understanding of music theory than I. However, I learned something about the personal and musical history of so-called "minimalism." (Potter falls prey to some extent to the problem of reifying an abstraction -- having first grouped some things together into a category, then searching for the true meaning of the category.) Is there a torch passed, so to speak, from Young to Riley to Reich to Glass? Glass is the only one to adamantly deny it, but Potter documents the basis for seeing it just that way (including Reich's influence on Glass). One aspect I am keen to know more about, but which Potter doesn't stress overly much, is the striking confluence of non-Western influences. Young and Riley are both disciples of the North Indian master singer, Pandit Pran Nath, who passed on in 1996. Reich studied both African drumming as well as the gamelan music of Bali. Glass studied Indian music, after being immersed in serialism if I've got the order correct. With the European "classical" tradition at an impasse at the turn of the millennium, it seems only natural that the future would lie in creative fusions and combinations with other traditions. (Not a very original idea, I realize, as evidenced by the recent emphasis of the Kronos Quartet among others.) Minimalism seems by now to be another style that passed into history and critical assessments -- is there an opening there that is being missed?
